Henri Bergson – Matter and Memory | AP22
This poster takes its inspiration from Matter and Memory (1896), the philosophical work by Henri Bergson that examines the relationship between perception, memory, the body, and our experience of time.
Against a deep black background, cobalt blue, pale blue, and muted ivory symbols form an abstract visual language of circles, eyes, celestial forms, and enigmatic figures. The composition evokes a universe in which past and present overlap, leaving room for interpretation rather than offering a literal illustration of Bergson’s ideas.
“The pure present is an ungraspable advance of the past devouring the future.”
The closing statement, “In truth, all sensation is already memory,” gives the composition its final emphasis.
The idea finds a literary echo in William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun (1951):
“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”
Although Bergson approaches time through philosophy and Faulkner through literature, both works invite reflection on the persistence of the past in present experience.
