MONO / STEREO brings the visual language of recorded music into one of the most contemporary objects of everyday life: the smartphone.
The design combines musical notation, vinyl records and geometric elements with the simple distinction between MONO and STEREO. Two terms that are now familiar to almost everyone, but which also represent an important moment in the history of recorded sound.
Mono recording reproduces a single audio channel, while stereo recording uses two channels to create a sense of spatial separation between sounds. Although stereo eventually became the standard for much recorded music, mono remains deeply associated with the early decades of popular recording, radio and vinyl.
The case itself introduces a different layer to the idea. A contemporary protective object built around MagSafe technology carries imagery associated with the physical culture of recorded sound: vinyl records, musical notation and the visual vocabulary of analog audio.
The result is an everyday object where two different eras of technology meet: physical recorded sound and contemporary mobile technology.
